UMK3 will be hosted at this huge major once again, May 22nd and 23rd. It is going to be treated as any other tournament and will receive stream time for at least the top 4. I will be providing commentary for the players watching, excluding of course any matches in which I may be involved. As always, we want as many good players to come out for this as possible, but because this event is taking UMK3 so seriously, more skilled players really need to show up. Be there to represent UMK3 as it will get full attention. I should also point out that UMK3 will be displayed on a projector, and we’ll still provide a TV for the players as well, most likely a 32″ 720p.

Do you believe in the competitive spirit of Mortal Kombat? Do you believe that it should be a respected tournament game with reasonable turnouts and more than regional influence? It is time to change the landscape of competitive Mortal Kombat. We started with UMK3, but we can do more for it, and more for MK in general.

For years, a select few of us helped rebuild a scene and achieved some level of success, garnering technical interest from the fighting game community. Previously, MK games had been regarded almost not even as fighting games at all, but at the very least, UMK3 received some level of respect because its players were adamant about sharing the knowledge and understanding behind the game. This kind of support for a game is what is needed to show others who might be interested that there is something to be interested in. Outside players cannot take seriously, a game that has players who constantly and only fight with each other about unprovable hypothetical scenarios through text, rather than just getting together with others and using application.

We decided to open a site where the existing players could learn about the ideas and strategies for UMK3 without having to sift through the hate. When a fresh influx of new competitors entered the scene in late 2006, naturally, more interest came along with it and the community expanded rapidly. However, disappointingly the community collapsed in on itself and it became clear that things were not going the direction they should, as the hate became internal. No game that started offline with everything else, should only be played online. Now, one year after the single greatest influence on competitive Mortal Kombat was left to determine its own fate, yet another wave of support is starting to be displayed.

Players simply do not want this to end. There is no reason for MK to be left in the dust. The series has much to offer, and while we acknowledge there is a large emphasis on UMK3 in particular, it is also clear that representation from the other games in the series wants to be involved. There is no reason for MK to exist merely as a regionally played game, or as a side game with a handful of players when it has nationwide support. There are tournaments held all over the country almost every weekend and with enough exposure and support, it can all happen.

It should now be more clear than ever, that this site is geared towards MK Tournament Awareness. Can we give this another chance and reawaken the spirit?

Join us.

22 players I believe entered, several DQs in the losers’ bracket so far as I could tell.

At least half of the tournament was filmed. I believe we only recorded matches that had at least one previously known player.
Videos are uploaded here: http://ultimatemk.com/dirview.php?current=matchvids/smithtownplaytrade

First off, much thanks to the dozen or so new players who all jumped as soon as UMK3 was announced. All these players are highly interested in learning the game and we appreciate that.

Thanks to LI Joe for continuing our ongoing fun-filled NJ vs LI feud.

Thanks to 9.95 for supplying the setup for this event and running the tournament, definitely gave me a break.

Thanks to Steve N for supplying the setup for MKII casuals. I believe the battle number reached about 105 matches.

I had a great time tonight. Very chill scenario for CFN and we had a great time at Applebee’s after with UMK3 SF4 and 3rd Strike players.

Thanks again players. Until next time.

Well, I’m sick as a dog, but I managed to record the remainder of the MKII tournament tonight. It’s grouped as winners, losers, and finals, which contains winners finals, losers finals, and grand finals.

http://www.ultimatemk.com/dirview.php?current=matchvids/necx

It seems like a couple sets are missing, if anyone who was there can tell me if I screwed up names or what matches are missing, it would be appreciated. I don’t have the patience right now, I don’t even have my glasses on lol.

Thanks again to all the players who showed. Next UMK3/MKII tournament is slated for February 27th, same location as NEC. So any players who said they would show and didn’t, you got enough time to get it in gear and show up, but it’s still close enough that it’s not a huge wait.

I hope everyone gets a good laugh at my MKII skills.

I also just uploaded the finals from the finish for ECT between me and Julian that we did during NEC. Not the greatest, more like BSing casuals done as a tournament. There is a partial infinite with Reptile, and also an uncommonly used Kabal juggle done to the frame so it’s entirely inescapable, several missed attempts at 4x axe with Nightwolf.

http://www.ultimatemk.com/dirview.php?current=matchvids/ect-finals

The UltimateMK UMK3 tournament took place December 6th, 2009 at NECX and the winner is Joe iloveu! Joe is a highly respected player for multiple fighters including SF3 Third Strike and SF4.
19 UMK3 players participated in the tournament, with 25 in the house, supported by a massively successful turnout for NECX of over 650 players by Saturday night. Virtually the entire tournament was recorded, along with MKII. I will try my best to get some matches uploaded as soon as possible. To anyone who wanted to go but couldn’t, or said they would but didn’t, you guys missed out on a super fun, super great tournament. I hope to see all the players again soon.

Results for UMK3:

The UltimateMK MKII tournament took place December 5th, 2009 at NECX and the winner is Summoning! Good job to our long time supporter. Julian Robinson placed second and received a $25 gift certificate for arcadeinabox.com merchandise.

There were 12 total players which was a pretty decent turnout, however several players did not show, which always disappoints me but I was very glad to see some new faces tonight.

Here are the brackets:

There will be UMK3, MKII and MKvDC tournaments at NEC this year. The turnout last year for UMK3 was pretty good with 16 players for a virtually unadvertised tournament, and it’s already looking to be good again this year with approximately 30 players showing interest so far.

I will be there Saturday and Sunday. Sunday, December 6th is now the official day for the UMK3 tournament ($5 entry fee) held with the other major games. Casuals for UMK3 will be held all day on Saturday in the side game room, MKII will be held on Saturday regardless as of right now. Whatever the case may be, players should just show up. If everyone who says “I will come out if there are going to be players there” just showed up, there’d be players there.

Also, as an added bonus to UMK3 tournament, Arcade Ed from arcadeinabox is giving me at least a $50 and a $25 gift certificate for products on his site. We can determine how we’ll work that into prize money depending on the outcome.

Both UMK3 and MKII will be played on PCs and we’ll supply 4 (four) UMK3 format sticks to use for both games, so MKII’s will have a run button on them but that won’t make a difference. I do not intend on bringing any 360 pads with me, so if anyone wants to use pad they should bring their own. We’ll also have a couple SF stick layouts available if necessary. We will have 20″ and 24″ wide screen monitors for your viewing pleasure.

We’ve done a lot for the community over the years even before we made ultimatemk, and all we’ve ever asked if for players to get active and represent MK at tournaments, wherever they may be. We can’t be everywhere but we try to run as many tournaments as possible in our region. I’ve run tournaments in 4 states, in Philly this will be the 6th I’ve run, and 8th I’ve been a part of. There have been 3 UMK3 tournaments this year already with double digit player turnouts. They’d be a lot higher if everyone who says they would show, actually did. Tournaments are a great and fun experience, you meet a lot of people, and there are endless games to choose from. You don’t all play just MK.

Start up time either day will most likely begin around 4PM, and I would personally be willing to accept late entries until the first Round is complete, as I generally have leeway on tournament coordination. The later we start, the less likely the tournament will finish. No more 6PM or later starts.

Thank you players, hope to see you there.
